Justice John Paul Stevens Announces Retirement April 9, 2010

Supreme court justice John Paul Stevens has announced his retirement.  He has been serving since 1975.  In the near future President Obama will nominate a new justice and then the decision will go to the US Senate and require a majority vote to confirm the appointment.  Once a justice is appointed they generally serve in that position for life.  What did the founding fathers consider when they decided that supreme court justices should be appointed and not voted into office?
